Expressive Photography
I have been following for some time the writings and photography of Alister Benn, a Scottish photographer based in the West Highlands of Scotland. His philosophy behind his images he calls “Expressive Photography” has left me in no doubt that his photographs have been captured with a deep love and affection for the landscape.
He describes the benefit of being out on location deep in a forest, peering into the shadows of giant old trees that creates dappled light whilst listening to the sound of bird song and experiencing a sense of place.
He comments that taking images at these locations can be very difficult. Forests are complex, busy, cluttered and intimidating but as he surrendered to the whisper of the woods, things do became clearer and he relaxed knowing that he was experiencing the place rather than striving to find a composition.
